Loss of Economic Position in Commerce Makes It Necessary (Jewish Telegraphic Agency)
The government of the Republic of Poland was urged to emulate the example of the Soviet Government in providing an opportunity for impoverished Polish Jews to settle on the land during the discussion in the Budget Commission of the Sejm on the estimates of the Ministry of Agriculture.
Speaking in behalf of the Club of Jewish Deputies, Deputy Heller declared that the Jewish population of Poland, in order to be relieved from its economic plight, must be given the opportunity of settling on the land. This opportunity should be extended to those Polish Jews who are the victims of the changes that are taking place in the economic and social structure of the Republic. The process of driving out large Jewish groups from their positions in commerce and in industry makes colonization work a necessity.
Land for Jewish settlers should be found in those areas which are being parcelled out by the government, for the benefit of the peasants. The drainage of the Pinsk region should be carried out with a view to helping the impoverished Jews to settle there. Jewish organizations are ready to cooperate with the government in this project, Deputy Heller stated.
