A four-week period of mourning in memory of Marshal Josef Pilsudski was proclaimed today by the Warsaw Rabbinate for all the Jews of Poland. No Jewish marriages are to take place during these four weeks.
All Jewish stories and factories received orders today from the Jewish Community of Warsaw to be closed all day tomorrow during the transfer of Pilsudski’s remains to Cracow. All synagogues will keep candles lighted the entire day.
During the Jewish month of mourning for Pilsudski special prayers will be held in all synagogues of Poland three times a week, on the Sabbath, Monday and Thursday.
A telegram of condolence on the death of Marshal Josef Pilsudski was sent to the Polish Embassy in Washington by the American Jewish Committee. The message praised the Marshal’s “opposition to all chauvinistic movements seeking to sow discord among the varied elements composing the population of Poland” and expressed the hope that “his exalted principles will continue to guide the people and their leaders.”
