Abraham Saltzterin, state chairman of the United Jewish Campaign in Wisconsin, returned yesterday on the steamer Duilo from a trip abroad on which he visited Poland, Czechoslovakia, Germany, Austria, Italy.
Commenting on the Jewish situation in Europe, Mr. Saltzstein told the Jewish Daily Bulletin representative that the Jews in Poland will need the aid of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee for a long time. The economic situation in Poland is terrible, he said. “If we could for a moment imagine that the aid of the Joint Distribution Committee was withdawn many thousands would be ##posed to starvation.
“Politically, the situation of the Jewish population in Poland has improved, but polities in Poland have ## influence on economics. It is the opinion of such Jewish leaders as Senator Szereszewski and Dr. Klumel that the aid of the J. D. C. is rescuing many Polish Jews from death by starvation,” Mr. Saltzstein declared.
JUDGE STERN REBUKES STEUER FOR STATEMENT
Max D. Steuer was strongly criticised by Judge Horace Stern of Philadelphia who returned yesterday on the Duilo. Judge Stern visited Austria, Italy, Germany, Czecho-Slovakia where he studied Jewish conditions.
“I was aruazed to learn on the steamer of the irresponsible charges of Mr. Steuer against the J. D. C.” he stated to the representative of the Jewish Daily Bulletin. It is unpardonable to speak in such, a light manner concerning the relief work of the J. D. C.” he declared.
