A spokesman for a Polish military mission in Berlin disclosed yesterday that the Polish Government has requested the extradition of Heinrich Wilhelm Kopf, president of the province of Lower Saxony in the British zone, on charges of being a war criminal.
Lt.-Col. Hubert Meller, press attache of the mission, said that Kopf, entered Poland with the German troops in 1939 and administered Nazi-confiscated Polish and Jewish property in Upper Silesia. “Kopf was responsible for sending many thousands of people to the concentration camps,” Meller declared.
Col. Meller added that more than 100 tons of gold looted from Polish concentration camp victims had not been returned to Poland, but was still being held by American officials in Frankfurt. He also pointed out that the American-licensed German newspaper in Berlin, Der Tagesspiegel, was still being printed on presses Staten by the Nazis from Warsaw’s Jewish newspapers.
