A statement on what Jews expect from Poland after the war was made in the Polish National Council today by Dr. Ignacy Schwarzbart, Jewish deputy, in the course of a general debate on the policy of the new Polish Cabinet as outlined by Premier Mikolajosyk.
“The declarations with regard to the rights of national minorities in Poland which were made by the late Premier Sikorski and which have now been endorsed by Premier Mikolajczyk, must not remain merely on paper but must become a living force,” Dr. Schwarzbart stated. “Despite all misunderstandings, it will remain a historical fact that of all national minorities of pre-war Poland, the Jews alone remained faithful to the Polish Republic.
“I do not know how many of the Polish Jews will survive the present tragedy,” Dr. Schwarzbart continued, “but there should be no ‘Jewish problem’ in post-war Poland. Polish Jewry, through its legitimate representatives, should be included in the activities of the government in rebuilding and in restoring Poland. The anxieties of the Polish republic are our anxieties too.”
Dr. Schwarzbart drew the attention of Premier Mikolajczyk to the anti-Semitic sentiments which have been fostered by irresponsible individuals and groups within the ranks of the Polish Army.
