Revision of the present Zionist opposition to the government of Marshal Josef Pilsudski was urged here today by Apolinari Maximilian Hartglass, in an address to the Zionist conference.
His speech aroused considerable attention in view of the fact that Hartglass is likely to succeed Isaac Gruenbaum as a deputy in the Polish Sejm.
Polish Jews became more favorably inclined to the Pilsudski government as the best possible under the circumstances, Hartglass declared, “although the government policy of economic extermination of the Jews is still maintained, the peasants favored at the expense of the urban population and Jewish cultural demands remain unfulfilled, nevertheless we must recognize that the Polish government offers protection to Jewish life, combats anti-Semitism within Poland and supports Jewish demands in international tribunals. In view of the cruel position of the Jews in Germany and the eminent danger of anti-Semitism in other countries, the Polish Zionists are induced to modify their stand toward the present Polish regime.”
The University of Warsaw continues to enforce strictly the numerus clausus against Jewish students. But since the number of Jewish students exceeded the numerus clausus proportion, five of the sixteen Jews were disqualified under the excuse of physical unfitness. This brings the proportion of Jews down to nine percent, which is in line with the number of Jews in the general population.
