A report circulated in the press abroad that martial law was proclaimed in the Lithuaunian capital has no foundation in fact.
The hunger strike of political prisoners which lasted for eight days was ended today. Among the 350 striking prisoners there were 100 Jews, including many students. The strike was said to have been declared in the Kovno prison because of alleged inhuman treatment. The exact conditions in the jail are not known because of the military censorship. It is stated, however, that a number of prisoners have died during the strike, including four Jewish prisoners among whom was a girl, Sheine Rappaport, who refused to eat for five days.
The prison administration refused to hand over the body of the Jewish girl to the Chevra Kadisha for burial. The case has called forth excitement throughout the city.
