It was learned from Vatican sources today that Pope Pius, in his audience with Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, did not touch on immediate aspects of the Jewish question but did describe to the British statesman the Church’s views on racialism. The question was also discussed during Mr. Chamberlain’s audience with Cardinal Pacelli, Papal Secretary of State. (The United Press reported that Pope Pius had complimented Mr. Chamberlain on his interest in the Jewish refugee problem.)
The British Embassy revealed that two memoranda by representatives of Italy’s foreign Jews, who are under compulsion to leave Italy by March 12, have been turned over to Mr. Chamberlian.
