Pope John Paul II beatified a controversial Croatian cardinal at a ceremony over the weekend. Jewish groups had called for a delay in the ceremony until Stepinac’s role under the fascist regime that ruled Croatia during World War II is resolved. The pope’s move puts Alojzije Stepinac closer to sainthood.
