Michael Sela, president of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, has been named by Pope Paul VI to fill one of the vacancies in the 70-seat Pontifical Academy of Science in Rome, it was reported here today by the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute. The Academy was established for the purpose of “honoring pure science wherever it is found.” Prof, Sela, who occupies the W. Garfield Weston Chair of Immunology at the Weizmann Institute, is known for research which led to a better understanding of the genetic basis of antibody formation. Also named to the Academy of Sciences was Victor Weisskopf, theoretical physicist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who serves on the board of governors of the Weizmann Institute of Science.
