Pope Pius XII told the United States in 1942 he believed reports of German atrocities against Jews were exaggerated, according to a newly discovered document in the U.S. National Archives. The document also indicated that the pope, widely criticized for not speaking out against the Holocaust, felt he could not denounce the Nazis without also criticizing the Soviet Union.
