Pope Pius XII was asked to intercede with various governments to secure the admission of displaced Jews, in the course of an audience which he gave to Dr. Max Gottschalk, representative of the American Jewish Committee, it was reported today.
The report, released by Dr. John Slawson, executive vice-president of the American Jewish Committee, said that Dr. Gottschalk informed the Pope of the desperate situation of the displaced Jews in Germany, Austria and Italy. The Pope expressed his concern with the situation and told the representative of the American Jewish Committee that he hoped that other countries will follow the example of several nations in Latin America which have received a number of displaced persons. Dr. Gottachalk came to Rome after visiting, on behalf of the Committee, the Jewish communities in Greece and Turkey.
