The Pope has interceded with Syria on the Israeli POWs and with Egypt on the unburied Israeli dead in Sinai. This was revealed here today by Chief Rabbi Shlomo Goren’s bureau after Goren had received a letter from the Apostolic Delegate, Msgr. Pio Lagghi, informing him of the Pope’s intercession. Goren had appealed for this-intercession in conversations with the delegate last month. The letter read in part:
“Your Eminence. Following the conversations which I had the honor to have with you…I wish to assure you that I have brought to the personal attention of the Holy Father your very humanitarian request with regard to Israeli POWs in Syria and with reference to the fallen soldiers in Sinai still unburied….The Holy Father has taken these issues very much to heart and has made a plea to the respective civil authorities with all the means and through all the channels at his disposal. I hope that all the efforts from various sources will finally lead to a happy result.”
