CONCERN OVER THE EFFECT ON THE PALESTINE POTASH INDUSTRY OF THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT’S PROPOSAL TO PARTITION THE HOLY LAND WAS EXPRESSED TODAY BY LORD LYTTON, CHAIRMAN OF THE PALESTINE POTASH COMPANY, AT THE COMPANY’S SEVENTH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING TODAY.
THE FIRM OPERATES EXTENSIVELY IN THE GREAT ALKALINE DEPOSITS OF THE DEAD SEA AREA. LORD LYTTON DECLARED:
“IF PARTITION IS CARRIED OUT THE AREA OF THE COMPANY’S CONCESSION WOULD LIE WHOLLY WITHIN THE PROPOSED ARAB STATE. CLEARLY, THE ISSUES RAISED BY THE PARTITION PROPOSAL CONCERN THIS COMPANY VERY CLOSELY.
“I WOULD, HOWEVER, REMIND YOU THAT THE PARTITION SCHEME CAN COME INTO EXISTENCE ONLY AS A RESULT OF TREATIES WHICH WILL HAVE TO BE AGREED UPON BY THE THREE PARTIES CONCERNED, NAMELY, THE JEWISH STATE, THE ARAB STATE AND THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT, AND FINALLY APPROVED BY THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS.
“DURING THE NEGOTIATIONS MANY DETAILS WILL NECESSARILY BE DISCUSSED AND ADJUSTED. YOUR DIRECTORS ARE IN TOUCH WITH THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT WITH REGARD TO THESE MATTERS AND WILL TAKE ALL POSSIBLE STEPS TO SAFEGUARD THE INTERESTS OF THE COMPANY.”
