The hope that difficulties between the Vaad Schochtem Oifes, poultry slaughters’ section of the Food Workers’ Industrial Union, and the Schochtem Union Local 440, an American Federation of Labor affiliate, may yet be cleared up by amicable settlement was held out by Arthur Simon, Health Department investigator in charge of kosher enforcement, after a secret meeting with a committee of the Vaad Schochtem yesterday afternoon.
Upon the request of the committee, reporters were barred, but Simon said after the conference, “I can summarize the results in one word–progress.”
Racketeering charges against Local 440, turned over to Simon by Mayor LaGuardia, were tabled until Rabbi Isaac Rothenberg, head of the Vaad Shochtem, can confer with Congressman Perlman, attorney for Local 440, early next week, to attempt the amicable settlement.
If the settlement is not consummated, Simon said, another meeting with the Vaad Shochtem will be held later in the week and the racketeering charges will be thoroughly investigated.
Local 440, and Local 19, which the Vaad Shochtem represents, were formerly one union. The Vaad Shochtem insisted that the illicit methods of Local 440 resulted in the split.
