The East German regime has been seriously embarrassed by a list of former Nazi war criminals now high in its ranks, submitted to it recently by Czechoslovakia. The East German authorities reacted angrily and have accused Prague of trying to “defame” East Germany because of its participation in the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia last August. The East Germans fear that more lists of ex-Nazis will be forthcoming from Prague. In addition, considerable material on war criminals holding high positions in East Germany was recently submitted by Simon Wiesenthal, the Nazi war crimes archivist in Vienna.
