Normal activities throughout Palestine were halted today while the population observed a two-minute period of silence in memory of King George V.

Schools and offices remained closed all day and special ceremonies were held at the Wailing Wall. Services were also held in synagogues throughout the country.

The day had not been officially proclaimed a day of mourning. High Commissioner Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope had stated that the day should be marked by individuals and organizations in the manner they saw fit.

Dr, Chaim Weizmann, president of the Jewish Agency for Palestine and of the World Zionist Organization, Mayor Dizengoff of Tel Aviv and other notables attended special services at the Great Synagogue.

In a sermon by Rabbi Jacob Meir, aged Chief Rabbi of the Sephardic Jews in Palestine, read at the ancient Hurvah Synagogue by Rabbi Levi, the hope was expressed that the reign of Edward VIII would witness the rebuilding of the Temple of Biblical days.
