Prayers normally recited on other Jewish Holy Days were intoned in packed synagogues throughout Israel today, the Fast of Esther, as Israel’s worst drought, continued with no relief in sight.

The Tefilath Hagesham, the prayer for rain from the Shemini Atzereth liturgy, usually recited at the end of Succoth, and the Avinu Malkenu, a fast day prayer, were recited on instructions of the Chief Ralbinate to coincide with the Fast of Esther.
