Premier Julius Goemboes’s disavowal of anti-Semitism yesterday was countered yesterday with an attack upon Jewish students at the University of Szegedin.
The Jewish students were beaten up and thrown out of the college buildings. The anti-Semites then proceeded to paint inscriptions on the walls at tacking the Premier. “Down with Goemboes,” were among the inscriptions seen.
At the same time anti-Semitic posters were plastered on the doors of Jewish homes in Polttauj Falu, a suburb of Budapest.
Minister of Education Homan ordered the University authorities to take rigorous measures to maintain order. The police of Budapest have taken steps to prosecute those responsible for posting the anti-Semitic bill boards.
The attacks upon the Jews are attributed in part to the anti-Semites rejoicing at the death of Count kuno Klebelsberg, Minister of Education in the Bethlen cabinet, who showed some friendliness to the Jews while in office.
Count Klebelsberg, who died yesterday of typhoid fever, was responsible for the mitigation of the numerus clausus which limited the number of Jews in Hungarian Universities to 5% of the total student number. This act incurred the wrath of the anti-Semites and led to numerous acts of violence against the Jews.
