Prime Minister U Nu of Burma, now visiting the United States, received a delegation of the American Labor Zionist Assembly today and in the course of a cordial exchange of views expressed his admiration for Israel’s progress which he observed during his recent visit there. He declared that he was also impressed by the earnest desire of the Israel Government for peace with its neighbors, and hoped that it would be achieved for the benefit of all.
The delegation extended greetings to the Prime Minister on behalf of the American Labor Zionist movement and expressed gratification with the friendly relations that exist between Burma and the State of Israel. The members of the delegation also expressed the hope that the Prime Minister’s visit to Israel will further cements the bonds of friendship between the two peoples.
Speaking as American citizens, the delegation declared its pride in the role of the United States in helping both Burma and Israel to achieve their independence and economic improvement. “This,” they said, “is a heart-warming demonstration of how international mutual aid, when coupled with the desire for self-help on the part of forward-looking nations, promotes human betterment and builds bulwarks of democracy.”
The delegation included Louis Segal. Baruch Zuckerman, Mrs. Jacob J. Levitt, Jacob Katzman, and all officers of the Labor Zionist Assembly; Dr. Dov Biegun, national secretary of the National Committee for Labor Israel; and Ossip Wollinsky, of the American Trade Union Council for the Histadrut in Israel.
