Premier Daniel Johnson of Quebec had pledged that his government will seek to “protect and strengthen minority rights in Quebec in education, civil rights and anti-discrimination legislation.” He made the pledge in an address at the official opening of the Sir Mortimer B. Davis Memorial Building of the Young Mens’ and Young Women’s Hebrew Association and Neighborhood House Services of Montreal.
Declaring that discrimination would not be permitted to “rear its ugly head” in Quebec, the Premier said his government was eager to see the Jewish community continue to contribute to the development of the province. He asserted “there is no question whatsoever of reducing or infringing on minority rights.”
