The Israel Parliament last night referred to committee Premier Ben Gurion’s amendment to the draft law providing for compulsory service for Orthodox young women who claim military service exemption on religious grounds.

Voting for the referral to the Security Committee were a combination of 62 deputies of the Mapai, Mapam, Progressives and Sephardim. Opposed were 28 members of the Religious Bloc, Herut and General Zionists. Concluding the debate on the amendment, Premier Ben Gurion called the Army the “best educational place after school, and a melting pot.”
