President Bush asked Israel to withdraw its troops from Palestinian-ruled cities in the West Bank. Bush made the request to Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres when he joined a meeting between Peres and National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice at the White House. Peres later told reporters Israel would withdraw as soon as the Palestinians “take over in their own hands the introduction of law and tranquility.”
