President Bush said a Palestinian state could be in place before he leaves office. Bush originally hoped for statehood by this year, but after his November re-election he modified that expectation to the end of his second term, in 2009. But in an interview broadcast Wednesday on Al-Arabiya television, he said: “It is conceivable it could happen before then if there is that firm commitment. And it looks like there is a firm commitment.”
