President Bush said he would present a “road map” toward Israeli-Palestinian peace once the new Palestinian prime minister is confirmed. Speaking in the Rose Garden last Friday, Bush said the prime minister must “hold a position of real authority” and called for the Palestinian state to be “reformed and peaceful and democratic.” Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat recently appointed his longtime No. 2, Mahmoud Abbas, to the new post of prime minister, but the appointment has not yet been confirmed. Bush also reiterated calls for Israel to end settlement activity in the West Bank and Gaza Strip as progress is made toward peace.
