President Coolidge Issues Message to Jews on Rosh Hashanah

“The people of the Jewish race have been of immeasurable advantage to us in our form of Government. They have brought to our people a spirit that can well be emulated by us all,” declared President Coolidge in a New Year message to the Jewish people through the “Jewish Advocate” of Boston. The president’s message read:

“I am very glad indeed to say a word of New Year greeting through the ‘Jewish Advocate,’ which represents such a splendid spirit in our community. There is always something about the New Year which affects us all. It is a season when we try to attain the ideals that we hope for. The people of the Jewish race have been of immeasurable advantage to us in our form of government. They have brought to our people a spirit that can well be emulated by us all. I hope that the New Year will hold much of good for the readers of this paper, and my sincere wish is that the coming year will find the Jewish people contributing as much to the welfare of our Nation as they have in the year past. My sincerest and best wishes go to each and every one of you and I wish for you all a prosperous and happy New Year.”

Senator Butler of Massachusetts, prominent Administration leader, in a New Year message to the “Advocate,” predicted humanization of our immigration laws, under the leadership of President Coolidge and pledged his efforts to permit wives and children to join their husbands and fathers in America. Senator Butler also congratulated the Jewish people on their success in redeeming Palestine as the Jewish National Homeland. His message read:

“I am happy to extend to the Jewish people of Massachusetts, through the columns of your publication, my sincere good wishes for the New Year. This observance, for the members of the Jewish race, is not alone a holiday which compels reverence and attention, but is also an expression of the immortal spirit of a people.

“As each New Year occurs, America shows new evidences of the contributions of the Jewish people to the culture, the civilization and the spiritual and material development of our country. Centuries of persecution have not checked the love of liberty which burns in every Jewish breast.

“In the year ahead I hope for continued happiness and prosperity among your people. I look forward to the further humanization of our immigration laws, under the leadership of President Coolidge. I propose to exert every effort in favor of the liberalization of the law which will permit wives and children, now in distanct lands, to join their husbands and fathers in America, so that families may again be happily united.

“I congratulate the Jewish people on the success of their achievement in redeeming Palestine as the Jewish National Homeland, and it is characteristic of the culture of your race that your primary effort in Palestine was directed toward the establishment of a Hebrew University.”
