President Eisenhower today promised to Keep the welfare of Israel In mind as consideration of Middle Eastern developments progresses. The President made the pledge In a letter to Rep. Albert P. Morano, Connecticut Republican.
Rep. Morano wrote Mr. Eisenhower on July 25 urging a supply of modern U.S.weapons to Israel. The Congressman said developments indicated more Russian arms may go to the United Arab Republic and expressed concern for Israel’s safety. He termed it essential to muster all possible strength against threats to Middle Eastern countries which have shown friendship to the United States.
In response to Rep. Morano’s letter urging assistance In the defense of Israel. Mr. Eisenhower said: “This Government Is. of course, keeping closely in touch with the Israeli and other friendly governments In the Middle East area and with all free nations concerned with developments In this region.”
Emphasizing the efforts of the United States “to have these problems resolved through the United Nations have not ceased, ” the President wrote: ” I can assure you the United States will take whatever action is found to be appropriate and necessary. As consideration of these matters progresses, I shall not fail to keep In mind the interest and concern you have expressed for the welfare of the State of Israel. ” Mr. Eisenhower subscribed to a position that the United States must support countries threatened in the Middle East.
