President Ford has appointed Rabbi Hershel Schachter of New York, a former chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, to the six-member U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, the White House has announced. The appointment is subject to Senate confirmation. The commission, headed by Arthur S. Fleming, former Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare, reviews government programs and advise the President and Congress on discrimination. The length of the appointment is at the President’s pleasure.
