President Johnson yesterday welcomed a group of mentally retarded Orthodox Jewish children to the White House and commended the aims of Maimonides Institute, Far Rockaway, N.Y., where they are students.
The eight children, participants in the Maimonides Institute new development program to teach the handicapped through religion, were introduced to the President by the Institute’s chairman, Rep. Herbert Tenzer, New York Democrat. They voiced appreciation for the $100,000 grant recently awarded the Institute. Rep. Tenzer presented the President with a 49-volume set of Judaica of the Soncino Library.
The children, through funds raised by their own efforts, purchased a beagle puppy to replace the recently killed beagle of the President. However, the President voiced appreciation for their thoughtfulness but returned the puppy to the Jewish school, suggesting it be adopted as a mascot.
