Theodor Heuss, president of the West German Federal Republic, today attended a simple ceremony at the Ardeatine caves where hundreds of victims of Nazi and Fascist massacres, including many Jews, lie buried.
Relatives of the martyrs and representatives of the Italian armed forces watched President Heuss deposit a laurel wreath on one of the graves and commented that the words on the inscription “spell forgiveness not vengeance.”
