Henri Seriano, president of the Jewish Community of Istanbul, has resigned for “reasons of health,” the Chief Rabbinate announced here today. A special meeting of the Community has been summoned to name a new president.

Mr. Soriano has also served as president of the Lay Council of the Chief Rabbinate for the past 20 years. The Council is the highest communal authority in Istanbul. For some time now, Mr. Soriano has been subject to criticism in the Jewish community and by the local Jewish press, which has repeatedly asked for new elections.
