Uruguay’s President, Foreign Minister and Government Secretary-General today publicly denounced the recent spate of anti-Semitic outbreaks here, and pledged the help of the army and all other government security services to help suppress any such manifestations.
Flanked by Foreign Minister Homero Martinez Montero and Secretary-General Manuel Sanchez Morales, President Faustino Harrison told a news conference here today, called specifically in connection with the anti-Semitic outbreaks: “The police and the army are patrolling the country in extraordinarily large numbers in an effort to stamp out such attacks. The Government feels the most absolute repugnance toward the latest outbreaks by extremists,” The President announced that he will place before Parliament the draft of a law “for the defense of democracy.”
Foreign Minister Montero told the assembled newsmen: “All security measures necessary to crush any new attempt at barbarism have been taken.” Secretary-General Morales asserted with emphasis: “The Uruguayan Government has not and will not tolerate anti-Semitic manifestations or political persecution,”
