President Truman today nominated Monnet Davis to the post of U.S. Ambassador to Israel. The nomination has been sent to the Senate for confirmation.
Mr. Davis, who succeeds James G. McDonald, is now U.S. Ambassador to Panama and was formerly Minister to Denmark. At one time he served as U.S. representative on the United Nations Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East. Immediately following the termination of World War II, he served in Washington as director of the Office of Foreign Service of the State Department.
The White House disclosed that President Truman accepted Ambassador McDonald’s resignation reluctantly. In a latter to McDonald the President expressed “deepest appreciation for the outstanding service you have rendered as special representative of the United States to the Provisional Government of Israel since March, 1949, as first American Ambassador to Israel.”
