President Truman called upon the American people to observe United Nations Human Rights Day today and “to defend and further the rights and freedoms of all people” as proclaimed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
In so doing, the President stated, the American people would renew their determination “that here, in our own land, the great guarantees in our Bill of Rights shall not be lost, or weakened, or curtailed. “
Meanwhile, a statement was released by Frank Goldman, president of B’nai B’rith, urging the Senate to ratify the United Nations Convention on Genocide and Human Rights. Ratification of the Convention has been opposed by a large number of Senators. A resolution against it was introduced by Republican Senator John W. Bricker of Ohio.
