Acting Secretary of Labor John W. Gibson today signed an order putting into effect the Fair Employment Practices policy for Federal agencies ordered by President Truman in his directive of July l6. The Labor Department thus becomes the first department in the government to institute the policy.
Gibson told a press conference that he had appointed Thacher Winslow, personal representative and assistant to the Under-Secretary of Labor, to be the Fair Employment Practices officer within the Department of Labor. Winslow will have full responsibility to act in cases involving charges of discrimination because of race, color, religion or national origin within the Department.
