Appointment of Mayor David Croll of Windsor as Minister in the cabinet of Premier Mitchell Hepburn of Ontario has received warm acclaim in the local English press.

The Montreal Daily Star stresses the fact that Croll is a Jew and says: “Similarly a new man, David Croll of Windsor, who becomes head of the new Department of Municipal Affairs (a department doubtless rendered necessary even in these days of strict economy by the seriousness of the relief problem as it affects municipal governments all over the Province), should be very sympathetic to all questions affecting labor, employed or unemployed. Mr. Croll’s rise to high position from the humblest and most ‘underprivileged’ of beginnings is one of those fiction-like ‘success stories’ that a new country sometimes happily produces. He is that unfortunately too rare thing in Canada, a Jewish Minister.”

The Jewish Daily Eagle asks if Croll, with all his abilities, would have risen to such political heights had fate brought him to Quebec instead of to neighboring Ontario.

“It is unnecessary to answer the question because the answer is well known,” says this paper, which adds: “It is enough to mention the fact that Mr. Peter Bercovitch was very often recommended for the office of Provincial Treasurer but the appointment was never made because public opinion in Quebec is swayed by certain anti-Jewish tendencies.”
