“Hitler has wreeked the League of Nations, the disarmament conference and what was Germany. He is now wrecking Austria and bids fair to wreck Central Europe. In the entire scheme of things, Dollfuss, much in the limelight at present, plays but a minor part”.
Thus, noted foreign correspondent and political interpreter, deseribe Germany’s Nazi chancellor. Because of the dilemma created by the menace of Hitlerism, simonds said, mid-European affairs are so shaping themselves that the world may expect, within a year, a “war of prevention” begun by France with Italy as herally, or a “war of aggression” initiated by Germany within five years.
Simonds pictured Hitler as a new Napoleon, at least with regard to the latter’s territorial ambitions in middle europe. The situation in Austria, he declared, has resolved itself into a battle for supremacy between the Nazis, supported by Germany, and the Fascists, backed by Italy, with the former apparently in the drier’s seat and eventually haveing as allies what is left of the Socialists.
UNION INEVITABLE
It is barely possible that the Austrian Nazis may not combine openly with their colleagues in Germany, setting up instead a separate organization and government. thus giving other nations no valid cause to claim violation of the Versailles Treaty, simonds said. He added, however, that union will nevertheless gradually be effected.
Hitler’s next step, the speaker claimed, is absorption of Czechoslovakia, with the eastern part given to Hungary and the western portion retained by Germany. Under this program, German-controlled middle europe would have population of 800,000,000 and be far more powerful than either France or Italy. Both the latter nations have analyzed Hitler’s scheme, Simonds indicated, and that is why the “war of prevention” probably will come within a year.
