The Jewish population is feeling anxious as a result of the appointment of a “price czar” by the government. The new official has the right to fix the prices to be charged for goods and, in addition, to set the wages of workers. Furthermore, he is empowered to examine firm books and to pry into every detail pertaining to the conduct of enterprises.

The Jewish population fears a paralysis of commerce and industry, with a concomitant reduction in foreign trade, may be in the offing. Such developments would react disastrously on the economic situation of the Jews, who are mainly engaged in trade and manufacture.
