The following figures show the Index Number of Wholesale Prices of Foodstuffs
No. of Items June July Increase
1. Cereat and Meat 13 97.1 102.0 4.9
2. Other food and fruits 34 97.8 99.1 1.3
3. Fuel and Miscellaneous 11 91.9 93.9 2.0
The general level of Wholesale Prices has again risen by 2.7% in one month and is now only 1.3% cheaper than last year. The chief contributing factor was the advance of cereals and flour and moderate seasonal changes in meat and dairy produce.
Prices of wheat which declined in June, rallied again early in July, remained firm for a while and were then followed by still greater advances. Local flour remained unchanged for the first three weeks, but has since risen by .15 per sack of 100 kilos, while foreign flour rose by leaps and bounds through-out the month due to the reports of poor crops in the United States, Canada and Russia.
