The price of bread in Israeli bakeries rose by an average of 95 per cent today, with the removal of Government subsidies and controls. The standard loaf, formerly weighing two pounds, three ounces and costing the equivalent of 8 cents has been reduced in weight by one quarter and now sells for the equivalent of 13 cents. A similar rise took place in the price of white bread and of rolls.
The Ministry of Commerce, which had anticipated a certain rise in prices following the removal of the bread subsidy, declared today that the bakers’ new prices were exorbitant, and indicated that measures may be taken against the bakers under the law limiting unfair profiteering.
