Prices on 24 types of consumer goods including bread, will be cut in Israel beginning Sunday, it was announced here today by the food controller, who explained that this was the first step to implement the government-sponsored austerity program.
Addressing a meeting of agricultural leaders, Dov Joseph, Minister for Rationing and Supply, said that the government decided to carry out its austerity program at all costs without taking into account any obstacles that mighe ensue. Officials of the Ministry of Finance today hinted that the government would not neglect wage controls in its austerity program.
The austerity plan is still the most widely-discussed subject among the Israeli population. Newspaper editorials, both for and against the program, are receiving keen scrutiny and next week’s debate on the subject in the Knesset is anxiously awaited.
