Georg Bernhardt, a parish priest in the south German town of Kempten, has been awarded the West German Order of Merit for saving a German Jew from Nazi persecution in April 1945. The Jew, who now lives in Normandy, was hidden by Pastor Bernhardt behind the church altar for two weeks after escaping from a concentration camp. He has written many times to the West German Chancellor and German newspapers, and his efforts resulted in the award being made.
