Rabbi Israel Miller, recently elected chairman of the American Zionist Council, has called on Zionists in this country to give priority to the “security and viability of the Land of Israel.” In his first major address as Council chairman before the Zionist leadership in the New York area last night, Rabbi Miller said that American Zionism “cannot evade the challenges which confront us — a responsibility which history has placed upon us, since the two loci of strength of the Jewish people today lie in Israel and America.”
The Zionist movement, he declared, “did not help to bring about Israel’s establishment in order to stand by and be a witness to its destruction.” Rabbi Miller also stressed the urgent need of the Zionist movement to become actively involved in programs for Jewish survival, which, he said, has always been a major Zionist concern.
Mrs. Rose Halprin, chairman of the American Section of the Jewish Agency, who addressed the meeting, stressed Israel’s need for more immigrants from Western countries, especially the United States. She said that a large portion of the Israelis were now taking an increased interest in the affairs of the American Zionist movement, and were waiting to see increased Zionist activity in the United States.
