Andrija Artukovitch, former Croatian Nazi leader charged with the annihilation of thousands of Jews, would be granted sanctuary in the United States and status to assume American citizenship under the terms of a private bill introduced in Congress by Rep. Harry R. Sheppard, of California. The bill was introduced shortly before Congress adjourned, the J.T.A. established today.
A report was requested by Rep. Sheppard’s office on the progress of the bill, HR. 8186, after word was received here that Artukovitch was ordered freed by Federal Judge Pierson M. Hall in Los Angeles. The judge ruled that there was no basis for granting Yugoslavia’s request that Artukovitch be returned to that country to face trial. He said the extradition treaty under which he was sought was not valid.
