Commander V. L. Kirkman, testifying for the Navy Department, presented the committee with exhibits to show the various methods being employed by Communists to strike at the vitals of the nation’s defense structure.
Women, he said, were being employed by Communists to board Navy ships to convert American sailors to Communism.
ASKS STRICTER LAWS
Colonel Daniel W. MacCormack, commissioner general of immigration and naturalization of the Department of Labor, testified that present laws permitting deportation of radicals are inadequate.
While the Labor Department has no specific legislation to suggest, Colonel MacCormack said that it would be glad to cooperate with the committee in developing the required laws.
Others who testified before the committee and requested specific legislation included Michael F. Shannon, grand exalted ruler of the Elks; George F. Brobeck, legislative counsel for the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Dr. Thomas H. Healy, representing the American Legion.
The hearing adjourned today, subject to the call of Chairman McCormack.
