The problem of the National Minorities in Eastern Europe whose rights were guaranteed by the International Treaties signed during the Peace Conference, was discussed to-day at the 5th Assembly of the League of Nations.
Prof. Gilbert Murray, addressed the Assembly for three, quarters of an hour on the duties of the League of Nations towards the National Minorities.
“The League exists for the purpose of securing justice for the National Minorities”, Prof. Murray stated. “It is, however, necessary to improve the method. It would be much better if the States which contain National Minorities would bring to the attention of the League, the potential troubles,
instead of keeping silnt until great difficulties arise and create a problem with which it is not easy to cope.”
The Greek Foreign Minister, Mr. Politis, who participated in the discussion, agreed in principle with the purport of Prof. Murray’s conception, but insisted that all those National Minorities who rely for the defense of their rights on outside interference, made themselves odious to the rest of the population.
