The Hebrew University and the Israel Academy of Sciences Jointly gave a luncheon here to Professor Martin Buber an celebration of the savant’s 85th birthday. Dr. Buber was president of the Academy of Sciences until 1962 when he resigned for health reasons.
The North Rhine Westphalian Government plans to establish a university chair in honor of the birthday event, it was reported today from Dusseldorf. The chair will be established either at Bonn, Cologne or Munster in conjunction with the Martin Buber Institute for Jewish Research. Dr. Buber lectured at Frankfurt University up to 1933, the year the Nazis came to power.
Among congratulatory messages received here, honoring Prof. Buber, were cables from Dr. Heinrich Luebke, President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, and Dr. Eugen Gerstenmaier, president of the Bundestag, lower House of the west German Parliament. Dr. Adenauer noted in his message that Germans today “remember reverently the impact of Professor Buber’s philosophical works on German spiritual life. ” President Luebke praised “the interpretive, creative, spiritual work” of Prof. Buber, stressing “the influence exercised by Buber’s teachings on the responsibility for one’s fellow creatures.”
