Professor Albert Einstein told a nationwide audience tonight that in order for Israel “to achieve real independence and conserve it, there must be a group of intellectuals and experts produced in the country itself.” He added that “it is the main task of the Hebrew University to produce them.”
Dr. Einstein, who is honorary chairman of the University’s Board of Governors and honorary president of the American Friends of the Hebrew University. Spoke by telephone-amplifier hookup to membership mobilization meetings held throughout the United States. “By working for the development of the University,” Prof. Einstein said, “we create a most effective safeguard for the future progress of Israel. By helping the Hebrew University as a research center, we raise the prestige of Israel and all Jewry.”
On the program with Professor Einstein was Dr. George S. Wise, president of the American Friends, and recently elected chairman of the Board of Governors of the University. He told of the direct contributions made by the University to the State of Israel and called for widespread support of the University in order “to strengthen the cultural and spiritual bonds between this great democracy of ours and the only truly democratic institution of higher learning in the entire Middle East.”
