Funeral services will be held here Saturday for Walter Friedlaender, a leading art historian and professor emeritus of New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts, who died at the age of 93.
Born in Berlin, he received a doctorate from the University of Berlin in 1898. In 1914 he became a member of the faculty at the University of Freiburg. He taught and published studies on a wide range of art. The Nazis dismissed him in 1933 from his university post and banned publication of his essays. He emigrated in 1935 to the United States and joined the faculty at the Institute of Fine Arts.
