Prof. Israel Levi, retired Chief Rabbi of France, died here today after a long illness. He was 83 years old. Funeral services will be held here on Sunday.
Prof. Levi, who resigned his post last March after an occupancy of 20 years, was born in Paris in 1856. In 1882 he joined the faculty of the Paris Rabbinical Assembly and four years later he was appointed Professor of Talmudic Literature. He was the editor-in-chief of the Review of Jewish Studies and a member of the Governing Body of the Institute of Jewish Studios of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
